CLONE STAMPED HAIR

Sample or Preset files are available at the main index Mastering Brushes for Photoshop.
This Technique replaces hair samples taken from one area and replaces them to another. When used in combination with image Hair Brushes, the results can be extremely fast paced.

Go to the Samples folder from this CD and Open it. Locate the file named Sherry.psd, then Double-Click on it to Open in photoshop. We'll begin with this image that is partially complete and turn it into a portrait at the finish.

1.) Click the Create a new layer button (located Bottom) of the Layers palette to generate a New blank layer. Select the Zoom tool and click on the work area to bring it to 100% scale. Next, hold the Shift key and tap S until the Clone Stamp tool becomes Selected. Right-Click on the work area to Open the Brush-Picker. Click the blue arrow (Top Right corner) of palette and a pop-out menu will appear. Select a Hair Brush library you wish to use. A dialog box will appear, just click OK and the chosen library will load. Now, Select a brush to start with, then press Enter on the keyboard to Close the Brush-Picker.

Go to the Options bar and check Use All Layers.

Now, position brush over a good sampling area of hair like shown below, then hold Down the Alt key and click to take a sample. (The curser will momentarily change to a Target prior to the sampling.)

2.) The first area we need to address is the missing hair over Sherry's Right shoulder. Position the brush in the vicinity you wish to add hair to.

Now, click several times to deposit hair. Reposition the brush, then click several more times as you work. (The Clone Stamp tool like magic replaces pixels with full flocks of hair!)

Continue working Upward a bit until you are pleased with the initial result.

3.) Select a New brush. Take a New sampling of hair as defined in Step 1 Above and position brush to the New area to be defined.

Click a few times to deposit hair. Doesn't have to be perfect placement, idea is to Create the Fill for the Back side of the hair.

4.) Select the Erasure tool . Select a Soft Round brush (I used the 65 pixels) and erase the Foreground hair on Sherry's shoulder. (If you have to change library to get the brush, change to Reset Brushes and the correct library will load.)

Erase until All the overhang to this layer is gone.

5.) Next, we'll need to concentrate on the Left side of Sherry's hair and remove a few groups of hair that just don't look quite right. Hold the Shift key and tap I until the Eyedropper tool becomes Selected. Carry over the work area and click anywhere on the Gray Background to change Foreground Color to it's Color.

6.) Select the Brush tool . Select a Soft Round brush (I used the 65 pixels again) and paint out the unwanted hair areas clicking consecutively as you work.

Continue painting until you are pleased with the result.

7.) With All the rework now completed, it's time to turn the image into a true portrait. Save the File as you will lose any layers with the Next Step. Go to File > Save.(This will Save the Original file with the layers intact.) Next, go to File > Save As. Name it something different and the New file will be Created and ready for the next Step.

8.) Go to Layer > Flatten Image. (This will merge All layers to just one.) Portrait Studio's use lighting to set the moods so this is where we go! Now, go to Filter > Render > Lighting Effects. When the Filter appears, adjust All settings as shown in the image below, then click OK to apply. (You may have to resize the circle in the image window and Drag to place correctly.)

Here is my finished portrait of Sherry.

Closing comments... Use as many layers as you like while building hair. In addition to being able to adjust each layers Opacity afterwards via the Layers palette, it also allows the user to Rotate and reposition the hair as needed as you work by use of the Transform commands primarily Ctrl+T.

I'd like to acknowledge at this time the Creator 3Dream for providing this beautiful Hair Model "Paradise Hair" to which I was able to render in Poser for this Tutorial. You can find more great works by 3Dream at www.renderosity.com. Mats for the character were provided by Freja that can be found at the same location sold as "Robyn".
