REALISTIC FLAMES

There are times when it is just easier to Create Flames from scratch.

1.) Go to the Samples folder for this CD and Open it. Inside you will find a file named Wax Letters.psd. Double-Click on it and it will Open in Photoshop. The Tutorial "Wacky Wax" Creating the Wax Letters can be found on my CD titled "Killer Styles and Techniques for Photoshop" by clicking here

2.) Press D, then X on the keyboard to set the Foreground Color to White. Select the Brush tool . Carry the brush over the work area and Right-Click to Open the Brush-Picker. Select the Soft Round 5 pixels brush, then press Enter on the keyboard to close the library.
(If the library does not contain the needed brush, click the blue arrow (Top Right corner) and a pop-out menu will appear. Select Reset Brushes. A dialog box will appear, just click OK and the correct library will load.)

Paint a shape similar to a flame on each wick. Change Foreground color to a yellow and scribble inside each a bit. Change Foreground color to orange and do the same. (Doesn't have to look very realistic at this point, we are just laying down the foundation in which to work.)

3.) Select the Smudge tool . If this is not visible, hold the Shift key and tap R on the keyboard until it appears.. Now, using the Options bar, click the downward triangle next to the brush preview to open the Brush-Picker. Select the Soft Round 9 pixels brush. Also set Pressure to 50%.

Click+Drag on the flames to blend and soften edges.

4.) Go to Layer > Flatten Image. Now, here's where the punch comes in for the flames. Go to Filter > Render > Lens Flare. When the Filter appears, enter a Brightness of 42% and choose 50-300mm Zoom, then click in the picture window where you want the light burst to apply and click OK.

The First flame is now completed. Repeat process until all flames are finished. Press Ctrl+Z to undo any Lens Flares you wish not to apply as you work.

Here is the finished work...
